As the name suggests, this Mexican restaurant in Canterbury pitches itself as a great place to catch up with friends and is a popular spot amongst both locals and visitors. Much of the menu is designed to share and while we always take restaurant myths with a pinch of salt, Cafe des Amis was allegedly Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom’s favourite Mexican while he was living in the city - we don’t fancy your chances of splitting a fajita with him though.
The dining room at Cafes des Amis is a colourful and lively affair, featuring bright mosaic tiles and wooden tables streaked with blue paint. The menu is a celebration of all things Mexican, drawing on both traditional dishes and those popularised by the Tex-Mex craze in the United States. To kickstart your meal, order cheesy nachos topped with your choice of spicy pork or refried beans, or opt for a portion of crispy calamari dipped in a refreshing mango salsa. Main courses meanwhile include the likes of spicy pulled pork enchiladas or duck breast in mole sauce, while tempting desserts see mango and shortbread cheesecake or churros dipped in warm chocolate sauce.
Aside from the a la carte, there is also a lunchtime menu available, as well as a dedicated range of dishes for children, which includes a ham and cheese quesadilla or chicken with rice and beans. Vegan and gluten-free diners aren’t left out of the fun either, with dedicated menus available for each, while diners on a budget can take advantage of the good value set menu (weekdays, 12-6pm) and the happy hour (weekdays, 5-6pm) which sees beers, frozen cocktails and wines by the glass all offered at half price.
Outside of happy hour, you can also take your pick of premium Tequilas and mezcals, as well as fun cocktails including frozen Pina Coladas and Strawberry Daiquiris.
