Part of the Crisis charity for single homeless people and ex-offenders, this spacious, light-filled daytime café is manned by trainees under the supervision of experienced chefs. ‘Homemade from scratch’ is the culinary message, and the short daily menus bring a whole host of sandwiches, paninis and baguettes, plus soups and hot dishes – although the all-day ‘fireman’s breakfast’ is a bestseller. There are often colourful salads too, as well as assorted cakes and pastries. Seasonal and locally sourced ingredients are at the hub of things, backed by carefully sourced coffees and other drinks. Crisis also provides an events catering service for big groups – either in the café itself or elsewhere.
