SquareMeal Review of Brasserie Zédel

Bronze Award

Piccadilly Circus may be best known for its raft of tourist magnet chain restaurants such as the likes of Pizza Hut and McDonald’s, but there are other ample opportunities for decent quality food in the area at prices that won’t break the bank.

Proving our theory is Brasserie Zedel, an archetypal brasserie which provides Gallic staples at low prices, and according to one reader, is “just like being in Paris”. Taking up residence in the glitzy surrounds of a cavernous former ballroom dripping with marble-clad charm, Brasserie Zedel offers an extremely reasonable prix fixe at three courses for less than £15 (including steak frites for mains), while the à la carte is full of classic French brasserie dishes.

Start with a hefty bowl of soupe à l’oignon or a clutch of escargots slathered in parsley butter, before moving on to baked trout with almonds, smoked pork belly or something more exotic such as spicy merguez sausage with couscous. Steaks are also perennially popular, from good-value haché with pepper sauce all the way up to a luxe rib-eye with Café de Paris sauce. To finish, the likes of crème brulee and lemon meringue tart are must orders.

The separate gluten-free menu’s “wonderful choice” gets a special mention, while over 30 selections from the all-French wine list are sold in five measures. Accusations of “unexciting” dishes are not unfounded but, for those who want a good French meal in the West End at a reasonable price, Zédel is hard to beat – as one reader puts it, Brasserie Zedel is the place to go for “really good, unpretentious food”.

Factor in the polite and knowledgeable service from the army of wait staff and the bustling, convivial atmosphere and it’s easy to see why Brasserie Zedel remains one of London’s most popular spots for a casual, easy dinner.

About

Brasserie Zedel is a grand Parisian style brasserie in the heart of Picadilly serving traditional and affordable French food in a large and welcoming setting with striking Art Deco interiors.  The restaurant’s food and exceptional value have made it an institution of sorts with culinary great Pierre Koffman labelling it “ the only real brasserie in London”. The restaurant is hidden away behind the ZL café in a building which also plays host to a classic American bar ‘Bar Americain’ and The Crazy Coqs, a popular live music and cabaret venue.

The a la Carte menu is available from 11.30am until midnight, perfect for pre or post theatre meals. Among the hors d’oeuvres Diners will be pleased to find all the French culinary stereotypes including Frogs legs with confit garlic mayonnaise, snails with garlic and parsley butter, steak tartare and of course French onion soup. Main courses are equally traditional with options such as braised beef and bacon stew in a Burgundy wine sauce with mashed potatoes; grilled tripe sausage with a mustard sauce; and grilled flat-iron steak with a red wine and bone marrow reduction.  Naturally desserts follow suit and guests will struggle to choose between the likes of lemon meringue tart; profiteroles with chocolate sauce; crème Brulee; or a caramelised apple tart for two to share. Every day a different plat du jour is added to the menu comprising French classics such as rabbit in mustard sauce, duck confit with white bean fricassé and salmon en croute with a butter sauce. On Sundays the venue offers a French take on a typical English roast.

The Prix Fixe menu offer astonishingly good value starting at £10.95 for two courses and £14.25 for a three. It usually comprises a shredded carrot starter with Dijon dressing, followed by chopped steak with peppercorn sauce and French fries and finished with a decadent Manjari chocolate tart.

New Years at Zedel

31 Dec 2024

New Year’s Eve, or le Réveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre as we say in France, deserves to be celebrated and where better to do so than with us at Brasserie Zédel for an evening of food, frivolity and a few surprises…

On 31st December from 9pm, experience Zédel as never before, as our vibrant Beaux Arts dining room transforms itself into Paris’ infamous Folies Bergère for one night only.

Like the legendary club with its late-night jazz and cocktails, from 9pm we’ll play host to an evening of extraordinary cabaret. An array of charismatic and colourful characters will roam; plus jazz, magic and acrobatics, culminating with The Gatsby Girls performing the Can-Can at midnight.

The Brasserie will be open as usual from early evening, and those wishing to enjoy a drink at the bar or indeed in Bar Américain before taking their seat for dinner are more than welcome to do so.

And so, set for an evening of light-hearted fun, we look forward to ringing in la nouvelle année in true Gallic style and would be thrilled for you to join us.

*Please note, the evening’s entertainment will roam throughout the whole restaurant floor, including the bar area. Some tables in the bar may miss some moments on the stage, but the majority of the entertainment will be immersive and interactive will all guests.

La Fête des Rois

06 Jan 2025

This year, our Epiphany – or La Fête des Rois as it’s known in France – celebrations are back once more at Brasserie Zédel.

Returning on Monday 6th January 2025 from 5pm, expect live French music, a complimentary glass of crémant, bespoke Zédel crowns, traditional cake (Galette des Rois) and for some lucky diners, their entire meal on the house.

Each table will also be served its own special Galette des Rois slice (flat puff-pastry, frangipane-filled cake). Those tables lucky enough to find a traditional king charm (‘fève’) hidden in their slice will have their bill taken care of by us – making it a very special Epiphany indeed!

Whilst not necessary, full regal regalia is also heartily encouraged. What’s more, for the first time ever we will be providing special souvenir Zédel crowns for all diners in the brasserie after 5pm.

Great food and menu. Reasonably priced too. Service was a 3 star as we asked to go at the end and the waiter said it was for 3 people and 5 minutes later sat 2 people there.

Great experience

This was our first visit here, we booked it as an anniversary treat and we had a great meal. Our waiter was very helpful. Restaurant acknowledged our Anniversary with a decorated plate and small dessert. Which was very nice. We definitely go back there as the atmosphere was very enjoyable.

Excellent dinner in an opulent setting...

This wasn't my first visit, by any means; I have never had a bad experience, never had anything but a good experience. On Thursday it was busy, as usual. My seven guests and I enjoyed a lovely round table in the middle of the room. The welcome at the coat-check from a very charming woman, set the mood for the evening. The reception staff were friendly and efficient, and we were seated quickly with drinks arriving in moments (I cheekily ordered a couple of beers as we sat down...). Miguel, who looked after us all evening (nearly 3 hours), was soon taking aperitif orders from the women guests and after food orders and the arrival of wines, our glasses were never empty (this was a celebration dinner). Guests reported excellent food (so deliciously French), and desserts came in the form of fancy coffees and Cafe Gourmand(s). Four of my guests had never been to Zedel before, and were very impressed. The lively performance from the musical trio was very welcome and not at all intrusive. Thank you Zedel, for another excellent experience. David

Usually one of my favourite places to dine, but not this time

I've been to Brasserie Zédel quite a few times and always love the atmosphere and ambience. Unfortunately, yesterday we were disappointed with the service. Multiple items were forgotten or incorrect from our order (a starter, drinks, condiments) the waiter also dropped a dirty fork on one of my guests white shirts which left a stain and it wasn't even acknowledged. When it was time to pay, it took 20 minutes between the bill being brought and them coming back with the card machine. All in all, it wasn't as I remembered it and I will be hesitant to return. I had also noted on our booking that we were there for a birthday celebration (which in past visits was marked with a little dessert plate). On this occasion, it wasn't even mentioned. I'm sorry this is what I used my Squaremeals voucher on.
