SquareMeal Review of Brasserie Max Afternoon Tea

PRs entertaining over brunch; ladies who lunch; well-groomed young men and their mag mates draped in designer carrier bags: that’s the mix at Max, done out in the Firmdale boutique hotel chain’s instantly familiar style – fin-de-siècle salon meets Fulham interior design. Depending on the hour, nibbles include everything from kippers, bacon sandwiches and the foodie foible that is an egg-white omelette to dim sum selections and mezze platters. Come cocktail hour, wannabe Don Drapers will take their old fashioneds with a twist, while Monty Don fans might dig one of the garden martinis – perhaps cucumber and kiwi, apple sour, cherry orchard or house signature passion fruit and ginger caipirinha. Brasserie Max is also a safe bet should you be treating an up-in-town relation or your future in-laws to a sophisticated afternoon tea.

Beautiful venue unfortunately food does not live up to expectations.

Beautiful venue unfortunately food does not live up to expectations. We had 2 afternoon teas and 2 gentlemans teas to share betwee 4 of us. It was my friends 60th birthday and this was a special surprise for her, sadly I was dissapointed with the afternoon teas.

The sandwiches were dry and boring with not much filling.

The scones were dense and heavy to eat, jam was delicious though.

The cakes were nothing like the ones shown on the advert, no fruit tarts, meringues, mousses, fruit or choux buns. We got battenburg, swiss roll and lavendar macaroons. very dissapointing.

The gentlemans tea was better though and as described in the advert, the staff were very attentive and polite.

Food and service exceptional, the decor was relaxing and not overly fussy.
