Four essential London foodie experiences

So you’ve found yourself in London on your travels. Whether you’re here for business or pleasure, you’ll need to eat. Luckily, our fair old capital is steeped in foodie history and traditions, and there are plenty of great restaurants where you can try them out for yourself. Read below to discover four essential foodie experiences to try in London.

Lamb and Flag pub exterior with patrons

Get cosy in a traditional English pub at the Lamb & Flag, Covent Garden

Book now

Why here: If you’re looking for a boozer that boasts plenty of history, the Lamb & Flag should be at the top of your to-visit list. It was formerly known as the Bucket of Blood, on account of the bare knuckle fights that took place behind its thick walls years back, and was supposedly frequented by the likes of Charles Dickens. We imagine Dickens would opt for the pub’s pie of the day, along with a craft beer, and perhaps Eton mess for dessert.

33 Rose Street, WC2E 9EB

Palm Court at The Ritz, Mayfair, London

Enjoy afternoon tea at The Ritz, Mayfair

Book now

Why here: Afternoon tea is that most British of traditions, so it’s only right that you enjoy it in the surrounds of The Ritz, one of the most opulent and quintessentially British spots in the capital. The offering is just as regal as you’d expect, featuring a clutch of finger sandwiches, scones with an abundance of clotted cream and jam, and a treasure trove of patisserie. Just make sure you adhere to the strict dress code (no flip flops here thank you very much).

The Ritz Hotel, 150 Piccadilly, W1J 9BR

Rock & Sole Plaice interior

Eat fish & chips at The Rock & Soul Plaice, Covent Garden

Book now

Why here: Fish & chips is one of the nation’s favourite meals, and it’s not hard to see why. For the best in town, we’d suggest heading to The Rock & Soul Plaice (pardon the cheesy puns), which was founded all the way back in 1871. The classic combo of crisply battered cod, steaming hot chips and mushy peas is a true winner, and don’t forget to douse your chips in plenty of salt and vinegar for the true Brit experience.

45-49 Endell Street, WC2H 9AJ

Roast Sept 2016 2

Tuck in to a Sunday lunch at Roast, Borough

Book now

Why here: A Sunday ritual for Brits, a well-cooked roast is the perfect end to any week. To avoid slaving over a stove for hours, book a table at Roast, where you’ll find a reasonably priced set menu, which could feature the likes of slow-roasted lamb shoulder studded with rosemary and garlic, or perhaps sticky date pudding with toffee sauce for dessert. You can also make the most of the fantastic view, which overlooks the ever-bustling Borough Market.

Floral Hall, Stoney Street, SE1 1TL
