About

The Sandeman Quarter is where you will find Bar 1790. The story started back in, you guessed it, 1790, when a 25 year old son of a prosperous Scottish cabinetmaker asked for a £300 loan from his father to set up as a wine merchant in London. This was George Sandeman, and he soon developed a name for himself when it came to quality and integrity. Bar 1790 pays homage to the great Sandeman, and is a wine bar for wine lovers. Open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday between 11am and 11pm, and for an hour later on Thursday, this contemporary wine bar has a relaxed feel and offers tapas style dishes and a great list of wines, port and signature cocktails.

Snacks on the food menu include a rose harissa nut mix selection, smoked mackerel terrine on toast with a crunchy leaf salad, and belted Galloway beef tartare with a rich egg yolk middle and grilled sourdough. If you like oysters with your drinks, then order the Pacific Rock set of oysters with Champagne vinegar, shallots and lemon wedges. Larger plates include a maple roasted aubergine veggie burger with caramelised onions and 1790 mayonnaise, the grilled red Argentinian prawns with a fennel and pickled cucumber salad and nachos with all the toppings. If you're staying for dessert then try the lemon posset with blueberry jam and warm vanilla beignets or the vanilla rice pudding with a caramel apple compote.

The cocktail list begins with port and tonic pairings, like the Rosé Offley Port with tonic water, garnish with lemon, mint and orange twist. Signature cocktails include the chocolate martini with tequila, chocolate liquor, a double espresso and vanilla syrup, along with the Amaretto Cherry Sour with cherry liquor, amaretto, lemon and lime juice and foam bitters.
