Award-winning and sustainably minded, Baked in Hove is one of this small town’s best places to grab a morning brunch or a leisurely weekend lunch. It’s conveniently perched on a corner of Church Road, where it gets all-day sunshine, year-round, for the perfect basking spot. With the outdoor terrace being fully covered and heated, there’s always the option to dine al fresco.
The strong sustainability focus is realised in a few ways. There’s an emphasis on using locally sourced ingredients, the café using renewable electricity, and contracts waste suppliers that take nothing to landfill. Takeaway packaging is also nearly always compostable.
During the week, the menu spans brunch classics like eggs Benedict and a chorizo hash with cheese, herby potatoes, spring onions, chipotle and poached eggs. For later in the day there are soups, sandwiches and burgers. Think grilled brie, bacon and cranberry in focaccia with house salad and fries or a classic burger served in a brioche bun with burger sauce, lettuce, red onion, gherkins and tomato.
Come the weekends, why not add a bottle of Prosecco to brunch? For £25 you’ll receive a bottle of bubbles plus your choice or chorizo or feta eggs, eggs Benedict, syrup covered pancakes or wild mushrooms on toasts. There’s also a fully-fledged drinks list that spans cocktails and ‘posh pops' though to beers, ciders and wines. For hot drinks, the coffee here has been perfected over the years, with beans now roasted for Baked to exacting specifications. The house-trained baristas are then able to grind these and make them into exceptional cups of coffee: from cappuccinos through to macchiatos.
Also, it might be worth noting – if you have a four-legged friend – that Baked is dog friendly on its terrace. Water bowls and treats are provided, with dogs required to stay on a lead and off of furniture.
