‘Omelette specialist’ may not be the sexiest USP in the business, but Abeno has chosen to build its trade around Japan’s hugely popular okonomiyaki (traditional, frittata-like offerings). The form is this: choose your fillings – anything from authentic squid, prawns & pork to a more westernised bacon & cheese combo – then watch as the whole lot is whipped up on a hotplate by a smiling chef. For non-believers, there are plenty of better-known Japanese options, including any number of stir-fried soba noodles, steamed rice balls, teppanyaki & salads. To finish, it’s worth taking a dip into the intriguing flavours of an exotic fruit salad with sweet rice dumplings on a base of red bean jelly. Japanese beer, plum wine, saké or a shot of shochu help keep throats well oiled.
