Food is served all day at this classy pub and boutique hotel, named after a 19th-century Manchester mayor. A daytime bar menu includes local specialities – corned beef hash cake, Abel’s Manchester egg – alongside sharing boards and small plates. We enjoyed Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire cheese and ham hock bonbons, generously sized yet not too heavy, served with spiced sauerkraut. An award-winning steak and ale pie from the Great Northern Pie Company came with hand-cut chips (marginally underdone) and mushy peas. Spiced harissa rump of lamb was accompanied by rosemary and garlic potatoes and a light yoghurt and mint dressing. Puddings are simple but hearty: Bakewell sponge with hot custard, say. The bar and dining area is spacious yet cosy, and it’s tempting to stay and sample the decent drinks list which encompasses a good selection of gins, whisky and cocktails alongside guest cask beers, wines and Mr Fitzpatrick’s vintage cordials.
