SquareMeal Review of The Bar With No Name - 69 Colebrooke Row

Silver Award

Tony Conigliaro’s cocktail bar opened up at 69 Colebrooke Row with the moniker ‘the bar with no name’, which might be a case of trying too hard by seemingly not trying at all. Whatever you call the place, Tony C has made it a destination for fans of classic cocktails and those seeking the cutting edge of this most un-dark of arts. You’ll find a classic 1950s vibe going down at this dinky backstreet spot. The Bellini is reinvented here with raspberry and violet purée replacing the standard peach, and the Prairie Oyster gets a kick with the addition of horseradish vodka. If you prefer a classic cocktail undisturbed by contemporary configuration, the bar staff are happy to oblige. There’s food, too, with little snacky options such as ceviche and a beefy pumpernickel sandwich. Masterclasses are up for grabs if you’re looking for a new life skill.

Oh please
Terrible, terrible, terrible. Keep in mind I used to love this place, way back when there was the spirit of the founding bartender in the place. Now it feels like a speakeasy theme bar, with the piano and the small glasses on napkins and jazz theme music, only now staffed by what looked like under-aged bartenders loudly boasting about which girl they were shagging (yes really). And the drinks – if the rest didn't seem cynical enough it gets worse. For anyone who has had a classic cocktail, made with pride, filled with generosity and with a genuine understanding of the craft, which this place apparently sells itself on, well you'll want to drown your anger with cheap pints of Stella. You can pontificate all you like about paprika bitters or distilled clay, but if you can't make a proper Old Fashioned, Sidecar or Negroni then its just increasingly obvious you're a cynical theme-scam. Don't fall for it, please.
