A comfortable ‘wine bar and grill’, run by genial staff who are prepared to be pally but also know when to back off, 40 Sheen Lane looks set to be a useful addition to this parade of shops and cafés. The menu is unchallenging – deep-fried Brie, nachos and king prawns with sweet chilli sauce sit alongside steaks and Thai green curry – but the cooking and presentation are better than you would expect, and prices are pitched to sell. Wines and beers (including Asahi and Peroni on tap) are the drinks of choice, although there are some cocktails for those who crave them. Warm brick surrounds make for a cosy setting in winter, but there’s a pretty garden for the summer. Comedy nights in the large function room downstairs (first Friday of the month) are proving popular.
