Formerly known as 111 by Nico, 111 by Modou is a restaurant in Glasgow’s West End owned and run by chef Modou Diagne. Until 2020 the restaurant was owned by Nico Simeone, of Six by Nico, but following the success of his other restaurants, Simeone decided to hand over the keys to Senegalese-born Diagne, who was head chef at the time. After a total rehaul, 111 by Modou reopened under its new name, serving an immersive tasting menu which allows diners to pick from a choice of ingredients for each course. Priding itself on using the finest local Scottish produce, the affordable, contemporary restaurant has a relaxed ambience but informed service.
Found on Cleveden Road, 111 is stylish from the off with its mint green and black façade. The inside of the 46-cover restaurant has a cosy feel with shelves lined with plants, wooden floors and banquette seating. Untreated concrete walls play host to a number of striking pieces of contemporary art, while the open kitchen gives diners a glimpse of the chefs in action.
The tasting menu at 111 by Modou, which changes regularly depending on the season, consists of five courses with the option to also add a cheese course. With diners getting to choose from a series of loosely described dishes for each course, everyone experience will be unique and there’s a certain amount of trust being placed in the chefs. Options for the first course might include smoked mackerel or black truffle, while for second course you can choose between dishes such as duck leg ravioli or crapaudine beetroot. You can expect everything from blue cheese agnolotti to rabbit saddle when it comes to the last two savoury courses, and choice of two dishes for dessert.
For £25 guests can order a matching wine flight with the tasting menu, or you can choose something else from the extensive drinks list.
