We tested the private dining offering at Mei Ume – and you should too
We headed to the old Port of London Authority HQ in Tower Hill (now the new Four Seasons hotel) for some top Asian nosh

Do you like Asian food? Me too. Even better, do you like up-scale Asian food done very, very well? Then you’ll love Mei Ume at Four Seasons Ten Trinity Square.

Its private dining room is a magical little place, where eastern mystery meets western elegance (courtesy of Hong Kong-based design duo AB Concept). The round table creates intimacy and encourages conversation between guests.

Mei Ume at Four Seasons Ten Trinity Square tuna carpaccio

That’s if you’ll be doing any talking. Because the food is good. The signature dish is the whole peking duck, but we went for the 10-course signature tasting menu – we’re glad we did. My absolute favourite was the yellowtail carpaccio with truffle ponzu dressing, which was almost worth the trip on its own. I made sure to soak up every last (zingy, salty, sweet and sour) bit of it.

Thank you Tong Truong (head chef), for also bringing us highlights such as a mixed mushroom wonton soup (deep in flavour); a selection of sashimi and nigiri (fresh, tender and generous); and stir-fried Chinese vegetables with ginger (salty, sticky and spicy).

Mei Ume at Four Seasons Ten Trinity Square sunset negroni

What to drink? We’d recommend the wine pairing for the ultimate experience, but if you’re looking for cocktails, Mei Ume delivers Asian twists on classic drinks. The tasty Sunset Negroni I had was served in a little, painted porcelain box with a lid and looked more like kimchi than a cocktail.

Looking for some interesting trivia to share with your fellow diners? The Grade II-listed hotel building was where the inaugural assembly of the United Nations was hosted.

Rich history and flavours? You should try Mei Ume, now.
