Named after a greengrocer who originally owned the site, Arthur Hooper’s sits in the heart of bustling Borough Market, between the Wheatsheaf and Market Porter pubs. This classy venue offers a mix of Mediterranean small plates and an impressive by-the-glass wine selection, collecting numerous awards since its opening. Ingredients come from local suppliers such as Southbank Fresh Fish and Paxton & Whitfield.
Head upstairs and you’ll find the elegant Fruit & Veg Room, its name again honouring the building’s former tenant. This high-ceilinged room boasts enormous windows overlooking the market and suits private dining, receptions or conferencing. The large table seats up to 12 but can be removed to host 25 standing guests. The room also has a large smart TV that can connect to laptops for presentations and a high-quality sound system.
Despite the English name, the cuisine is primarily Italian. Expect focaccia and Nocellara olives upon arrival, swiftly followed by punchy small plates like burrata with heritage tomato, red onion and mint. Moving to the larger plates, head chef Federico Tosi continues his Mediterranean exploration with the likes of handmade fettuccine with pork and fennel ragu, or onglet steak with sauteed mushrooms and balsamic onions. Vegetable plates include Cornish spring greens with chilli and capers alongside. Desserts nod to the restaurant’s British setting with cherry Eton mess, and to its continental origins with chocolate amaretto cake with hazelnut cremeux.
To drink, British and Mediterranean beers are available, along with old and new world wines and a full range of spirits. For libation enthusiasts, Arthur Hooper’s offers private tastings, whiskey experiences and mixology masterclasses.
