26 of the most romantic hotels in London and the UK perfect for weekends away

There’s nothing like a weekend away at a romantic hotel in the UK to inspire romance, even if you’re lucky enough to live in a penthouse apartment or beautiful Kensington townhouse. Preparing a Champagne supper or a candlelit bubble bath for a loved one is a great way to show them you care but even if the place is spotless, there’ll always be those little distractions (or, if you’re a parent, big distractions) that keep you from fully enjoying the moment. That’s why a weekend, or even just a night in a romantic hotel is a stellar idea, whether for a special occasion such as a minimoon, an anniversary or Valentine’s Day, or just because it’s a lovely thing to do once in a while.

Whatever your idea of relaxation and indulgence is – whether it’s soaking in a Jacuzzi at a fancy spa hotel, horse riding in the grounds of a grand country house hotel, or just holing up in your room at one of London’s best luxury hotels – we assure you that some time away from household chores and life admin will work wonders for your relationship.

As romance is subjective, we’ve done our best to include a variety of different dwellings that we think come under the category of ‘romantic hotels’. With hundreds of highly-rated romantic hotels in London alone, it wasn’t easy to distil them down to a mere handful, but hopefully you’ll agree that each one has something very special to offer. All of our picks, both in London and further afield, are decadently furnished and offer excellent food and drink, including a number of Michelin Star restaurants. Each of our UK choices also benefits from stunning surroundings, so if you’re craving fresh air and lush scenery, you definitely need to check them out. None are cheap, but we’re sure you’ll agree that you can’t put a price on love.

Most romantic hotels in England

With centuries of history, it’s no wonder that England boasts hundreds of stunning country mansions, halls, castles and townhouses that have been converted into luxury hotels that are well worth a visit. There are many more romantic hotels across the UK than our clutch below, but we think these a great place to start.

Tillingham, East Sussex

Why we love it: Tillingham is a bio-dynamic vineyard with 11 stylish rooms and an award-winning restaurant, located off the beaten track near the town of Rye in East Sussex. This sustainable hotel offers a serene getaway for eco-inclined couples looking to enjoy some proper peace and quiet. There are no TVs so as to encourage guests to reconnect with nature, which isn't difficult when the scenery is this stunning. Enjoy sweeping views of the estate and surrounding fields, or take a stroll to the nearby viewing point to revel in spectacular views of the landscape. Rooms are decorated in a Scandi-style, with antique furniture and modern bathrooms, and are kitted out with 100% natural toiletries. For a truly unique rural retreat, there are two high-spec bell tents which can be hired for more adventurous couples, and come complete with a double bed, fire pit and private terrace. Don't miss a meal in its award-winning restaurant for the ultimate mini break.

Grantley Hall, Yorkshire

Why we love it: The sweeping driveway up to Grantley Hall provides an impressive unveiling of the manor house at the end of your journey and offers up a clue as to the level of service you’re about to be treated to. Before you even step through the doors your keys are whisked away to allow for your car to be valet parked by the charming team, where it will likely take up its spot alongside a row of supercars. Once inside, the interiors are plush and classic in that charming English way. Rooms are large and exceptionally well appointed, with many of them playing host to deep bathtubs that offer beautiful views of the grounds. Outside the confines of your bedroom, there’s a luxurious spa with an outdoor pool and treatment rooms plus a state-of-the-art gym (if that’s your thing) and a Michelin starred restaurant by chef Shaun Rankin that is perfect for a special date night spot.

The Newt in Somerset, Somerset

Why we love it: If you and your partner are bona fide foodies then you can’t beat a stay at The Newt, a veritable paradise for gourmands. The menus here are all built around produce from the estate itself, and the sprawling gardens make a wonderful place to wander through for an afternoon stroll. With a complimentary mini larder as well as a garden tour and access to the serene spa all thrown in, you’d be hard pressed to get bored here. Rooms are split between the main building – Hadspen House – and The Stable Yard, with the former housing four poster beds and rolltop baths in the rooms, while the latter brings a more rustic (yet still luxurious) feel with exposed brick walls, wonderfully warm wooden beams and mixed sumptuous textiles used throughout.

Food here is nearly entirely created from estate-grown produce, while the rooms are gloriously plush. Our favourite for an all-out blow-out is the Long Room which features its own dining space, sitting room, terrace and kitchen, as well as an open fire in the bedroom for a cosy romantic touch.

Why we love it: For old world romance there’s nowhere better than the elegant Cliveden House in Berkshire, which looks like it’s been pulled straight from the pages of a Jane Austen novel and hosted one Meghan Markle the night before her wedding no less. In fact, this five-star hotel sits in sprawling gardens and woodlands that skirt along the banks of the River Thames and are in themselves so impressive that they’re a National Trust treasure, attracting thousands of visitors each year. With a glass-encased pool you can drink up the views from the comfort and warmth of the indoors, or adventurous couples might prefer to get out into the great outdoors and then unwind here after a long day of walking. All the room designs are unique, but for ultimate exclusivity our favourite has to be the private cottages which allow you extra space to spread your wings in peace and quiet.
