The stately and historic look of this Georgian building make it a natural option for weddings. The white Palladian façade creates an impressive entrance for arrival, and the impact is continued in the beautiful foyer with its remarkable staircase.
For a larger dinner, head to the first-floor Assembly Room with its Georgian period details. The building is the former St Albans Town Hall (originally built in 1831) and the Assembly Room was used to host grand balls, galas and dinners. A restoration of the whole building was completed in 2018, restoring it to its former glory. This means the Assembly Room is again able to hold such prestigious events – weddings included.
The elaborate gold leaf ceiling roses, the giant mirrors above the original fireplaces and opulent chandeliers make the perfect backdrop for a wedding breakfast. Still, there’s enough blank space for you to add your own personal touches and decorations to it. There’s also access to a first-storey balcony – perfect for wedding photography and ideal on a hot day.
If your party is a smaller one, we like the Courtroom, which in turn offers more of an edgy and quirky backdrop for your wedding. It’s one of the few remaining pre-Victorian courtrooms in the country and is bursting with character and charm. The octagonal shaped room and skylight is completed with wood-panelled pews and the judge’s chair remains.
Alternatively, you can hire out entire floors, or indeed, the entire building, leaving guests to explore the galleries and other impressive spaces. Catering is provided by the in-house team, Leafi, which specialises in locally sourced food. They also have a dedicated events manager at hand if needed.
