The Plough and Harrow is a country house style hotel in Edgbaston, Birmingham, a five minute drive from Birmingham New Street station. Built in 1704 as a wayside inn, it’s one of the city’s oldest hotels, with its blend of Victorian red brick architecture and large lawns making for a unique combination of city centre proximity and greenery. Many famous guests have stayed at the hotel, including J.R.R. Tolkein and his wife in 1916 while he was on leave from the army. Today, the hotel is part of Best Western but still independently run.
Alongside the 44 guest rooms, there’s six meetings and function rooms, catering from events ranging from business conferences to birthdays to weddings and civil partnerships. The hotel can cater for weddings at both ends of the size spectrum, largely due to its dedicated wedding team. Bigger groups can opt for the exclusive use package, allowing them to hire the whole hotel for 24 hours. Everything from afternoon tea to a wedding BBQ is possible when it comes to food options.
The Terrace Suite, part of the main Terrace Restaurant, is a great option for both weddings and special occasions in general. As well as access to the terrace, you and your party can also use the gardens, ideal for summer. Beauforts Bar, the hotel’s onsite pub, makes for another great private hire option.
The hotel’s partnership with Deliveroo expands its culinary options beyond what can be made in its kitchens. Guests can order from a range of local takeaways and restaurants before then eating in the bar, lounge or their rooms, all while using the hotel’s cutlery, plates and napkins at no extra charge.
