Peckforton Castle is a hotel and wedding venue near its namesake village in Cheshire. It was built in 1851 for John Tollemache, who at the time was the largest landowner in the county. Although a family own, its design was that of a Norman castle, complete with a gatehouse, portcullis, dry moat, arrow slots, and large towers. Why Tollemache chose to build a fortified medieval castle during the Industrial Revolution is debated - some say he was protecting himself from any potential revolutions from Liverpool or Manchester, while others believe he wanted to create the biggest display of wealth possible.
Its grand settings and secluded location mean Peckforton Castle is an ideal wedding venue. Passing through the gatehouse after the long sweeping drive brings the promise of a fairytale, with this only helped by the castle surroundings. There’s something suitable for weddings of all sizes, several-hundred-person-strong gatherings to an intimate collection of close loved ones.
The venue is licensed to conduct civil ceremonies, meaning the whole day can take place under one roof. Larger ceremonies are held in The Great Hall, a breathtaking space steeped in grandeur that features original stained-glass windows, a vaulted sandstone ceiling, and a period fireplace. The Chapel is perfect for a marriage blessing or vow renewal, and offers a more intimate setting. It hosted its first wedding in the 1970s when the castle was leased to George W. Barett by the 4th Lord Tollemache. A special decree was issued by the Archbishop of Canterbury for Peckforton to legally hold Catholic Weddings. The Wine Cellar makes for a unique ceremony setting, its candlelit stone floors and imposing cylindrical structures adding a sense of history and drama.
Wedding breakfasts are usually held in The Drawing Room, allowing the wedding party to sit in front of the original fireplace on one long table while guests enjoy a room flooded with light and character. From here, guests and the newly married couple can move onto one the function rooms, the perfect place for the evening party.
