Old Downton Lodge is a wedding venue in the village of Downton on the Rock near Ludlow in Shropshire. Its blend of architectural styles serve as a portal to a bygone time. There’s medieval barns, half timbered outhouses, and Georgian additions from local stone. These surround a herb and flower covered central courtyard, offering views out over the Hereford hills. The result is a venue grounded in pure escapism that creates lasting memories.
Smaller, more personal weddings are better suited to Old Downton Lodge, with guests recommended to stay for two nights, although this is not mandatory. It is licensed for civil ceremonies, meaning the day can take place in a single venue, and all weddings are exclusive. These are hosted in either the Museum Room or the Dining Room. The former is the most mysterious room on site. Its name is of unknown origin and ceremonies are conducted in front of the impressive, still-functioning cider mill. The dining room is equally as historic and charming, retaining much of Old Downton Lodge’s 11th century roots and stylings.
Both rooms can then be quickly converted to host the wedding breakfast and reception. Old Downton Lodge prides itself on its flexibility and creation of bespoke experiences, allowing couples to create the day of their dreams. The surrounding gardens and countryside provide ample opportunities for wedding photos.
An in-house team of chefs are on hand to plan and create the wedding breakfast menus at Old Downton Lodge. This can range from traditional three course sit down meals to more informal buffets. The team is happy to meet and discuss to see what works best with budgets and preferences.
Guests and the newly married couple can then stay over in one of Old Downton Lodge’s nine rooms. The four poster double rooms are ideal for using as a bridal suite, the perfect reflection of the historic surroundings.
