SquareMeal Review of Zizzi One New Change

Nationwide Italian chain Zizzi is not exactly the last word in cutting-edge culinary cool, but it’s been quick off the mark to introduce some hot new trends. A range of gelati by Kitty Travers (the artisan ice-cream maker talent-spotted by St John’s Fergus Henderson) and a recently introduced menu of ‘cichetti’ (Italian-style ‘tapas’) as seen at far hipper addresses, are reasons to revisit your local branch. The rest of the menu may not wow, cautions a reader, ‘but it’s nothing to spoil your day’. Pastas are reliable, and the pizzas – some of which come as half and half variations or hybrids – help those stuck between king prawn and spicy sausage or regular pizza and calzone. Zizzi aims to please, and its comfortably rustic, flatteringly lit restaurants usually do just that.

Not bad, not great
I had high hopes for Zizzi after looking at their menu online - it was varied, had loads of options and lots of yummy ingredients. I was a bit disappointed with most of my dishes though. The mushroom pasta I ordered was a bit harder than al dente, and there was virtually no cream sauce on it. It did have a nice flavour, but it was a bit under cooked and not saucy enough. The garlic and mozzarella bread was ok, but not very garlicky. The mushroom brindisi had an odd bitter flavour to it - perhaps this is what it is supposed to taste like? The salted caramel dessert was delicious. There was a loooooong wait between entrees and mains, but the service was generally quote good. The atmosphere was also nice and being able to see into the big open kitchen was nice too. I would probably not go bak as there are other Italian chains (such as Prezzo) which are nicer.

Girlie catch-up for a quick lunch
The venue was very accommodating, as friend had a stroller and required some extra space. Placed us in a nice quiet spot at the back. It was a busy lunch time, but service was maintained throughout. the Menu looks like it has had a revamp so there was lots of new things to choose from. We didn't stick around for desserts instead opted for a beverage and really liked the cute cup and saucer set (as it had a cute yellow bicycle on it). Was easy to book online, could actually hear yourself speak even though it was busy. Would go back as long as the service is maintained and even if it is busy they can ensure everyone is being served. Very good.

Great value and reliable!
Zizi is always a reliable chain, the food is good quality and always very good value – we had a 50% off voucher which made a big difference. This is a nice site and has a good atmosphere unlike some of the other branches which can often be a bit cold.
