Inspired by the pan-Asian exploits of a 14th-century Chinese admiral, diplomat and explorer called Zheng He, this aptly named restaurant is a tasty hybrid that tours the native provinces, but also pulls in ideas from Malaysia and beyond. Set sail with seaweed egg-drop soup, beef satay or cucur udang (Malaysian-style prawn fritters) before taking in blisteringly hot ‘godmother’s chilli’ (from Szechuan), Singapore-style crispy chicken with mango or one of the Cantonese classics – beef in oyster sauce or char-sui pork, say. Alternatively, tell the staff what you fancy and let the kitchen conjure up one of its ‘chef’s choice’ set deals. Bare tables, high-backed wooden chairs and various shades of panelling are standard-issue design features, although the interior also sports assorted animal sculptures and figurines – including the odd giraffe or two. The owners have brought their winning formula to London with the launch of Zheng Chelsea – success breeds success, it seems.
