About

Glass-fronted WestBeach restaurant is a gorgeous space which benefits from an ideal location, just yards from the beach, sea and pier.

The restaurant does a brilliant job of bringing the outside in, with its glass frontage opening out onto Bournemouth’s famously pretty beach. On warmer days, the outside tables are the place to be thanks to wooden decking to keep the sand away and retractable awnings that offer shade from the sun.

Inside, WestBeach’s dining room is an open-plan space with a laid-back, beach-style vibe that allows those stunning views to do most of the talking. Sanded down wooden tables and chairs and sky blue walls add to the serene feel, while daily-changing specials written up on blackboards and chefs beavering away in full view thanks to an open kitchen show diners that WestBeach is far from a case of style over substance.

When it comes to the food served here, you won’t be surprised to discover that fresh fish dominates, sourced from local waters as well as Brixham and Billingsgate. Expect to tuck into the likes of Thai monkfish curry, pan-fried halibut or poached cod. There is still sufficient choice to please meat lovers though, with carnivorous options including the likes of 8oz fillet steak that can be enjoyed alongside chips or rocket and parmesan salad.

Once you have polished off your mains, pick from the range of traditional desserts. There is chocolate fondant with clotted cream ice cream and citrus tart for those with a sweet tooth, while lovers of all things savoury can instead opt for a local cheeseboard accompanied by chutneys and biscuits.

WestBeach is also open for breakfast and lunch. Begin your day with eggs benedict or crushed avocado on sourdough toast, while the quick lunch menu brings a selection of inexpensive, popular dishes – think beer-battered cod, a fish finger sandwich or a WestBeach fish pie.

New Year's Day
We made a booking on line but phoned to change the time from 12 to 3:30 for New Year's Day. On arriving we were told the lunch menu had finished at 3, but the manager realised the mistake made, as we were not told on the phone about this. He speedily asked the chefs to cater for us and we promptly ordered. Our lunch was fantastic. It was delicious. All four of our children happily ate their entire courses followed by mouth watering deserts. The service was impeccable. Our waiter was polite and charming. We have been here several times over the years and will continue to return from London to one if our favourite restaurants in the U.K. Thankyou to the manager for rectifying the mistake so well and for an incredible and memorable start to the year !

We took four friends there for lunch. It was a lovely sunny day so the atmosphere was great. Generally the food was OK but one person had the crab thermidor which looked a bit dry. The restaurant was very busy and they could have had a few more staff but overall, the manager coped well to make sure that we were served.

We first visited WestBeach when it very first opened probably about 8 years ago, there was just nowhere better to be on a lovely sunny afternoon, great fish, lovely wine, sitting right on the edge of the sandy beach with a great view of both good and bad, sights walking along the promenade. Subsequent return visits saw it slowly deteriorate, in service and decor, ending up with the feeling of a neglected and rundown restaurant. Much as the previous review says. Poor old Bournemouth… it is a complete nightmare to try and find somewhere decent to eat if you want to be any more daring than Cafe Rouge – all rather depressing really. A couple of years ago a new restaurant opened called the Print Room, which was fantastic, and so when we went back this year we were really sad to see that it had closed down, and not being able to bring ourselves to going to Zizzi decided to have a look at WestBeach again. We were pleasantly surprised when we visited in September 2010 to see that they have made some improvements. They have smartened up the interior so it looks a lot fresher, the food is still of a really good standard, the service was really efficient and friendly. Between the four of us we had had a really good meal including a well prepared seafood platter, my husband had the mussels (no beards!), I had the sea bass which was cooked really well. I hope the earlier reviewer will give it another try, we certainly will next time we are down.

October 2009 – Westbeach Bournemouth – We heard about this restaurant by way of a recommendation. Menu looks fantastic, shame about the non prepared mussels – no one wants beards left in their mussels! The food went back to the kitchen twice and chef still couldnt get it right! Apparantly the owners wont fix the toilets so ladies are out of use and a horrible smell wafted into the restaurant we asked to move tables, maybe our first instinct to leave would of been the better option. If you wanted to wash your hands after your meal or after using the toilet then there is no soap provided to wash your hands and toilet facilities very poor and dirty. Very dissapointed. Service slow and it cost us £50 for one main course, a bottle of wine that neither of us really wanted any more during such a dissapointing experience. We would of been happy to pay over the odds for a fantastic 2 rosette standard meal on a seafront location with fresh fish etc, shame it doesnt hold up to its rating. Think the AA need to re assess this restaurant. What a shame! :-(
