Whatever the weather is doing outside, this Mexican cantina rocks to a sunshine vibe – the decor is bright, light and colourful, staff are cheery and efficient, the atmosphere is boisterous, and from the first sip of hibiscus water to the chilli seeds that come with the bill, owner Thomasina Miers has succeeded in recalibrating the image of Mexican cuisine for Brits. From staple snacks such as zingy, chunky guacamole to enticing small plates of slow-braised pork pibil tacos with pink pickled onions, the cooking is full of verve, while full-flavoured bigger dishes offer terrific value for money – think generously stuffed burritos or bavette steak rubbed in smoked chillis. With its relaxed, family-friendly vibe, Mexican cocktails and gluten-free dishes (including an entomologist’s chocolate brownie made with cricket flour), this is a come-one, come-all kind of place that’s deservedly packed from noon til night.
