If you’re looking to get your seafood fix whilst in the New Forest, then look no further than Verveine. Located in the seaside village of Milford-On-Sea, the team utilise the local produce and in-house specialist fishmongers when creating the menu here. The interior gives a nod to the ocean, with its blue patterned tables that are reminiscent of waves, and plates that almost look like they could be shells and stones picked up off the beach. The restaurant has received some serious acclaim over the years, including being nominated in various top 100 restaurants lists, confirming an already solid reputation in the area.
Chef patron David Wykes takes inspiration for his food from nostalgic experiences throughout his childhood growing up in Hastings, using only the best ingredients that are fresh from the land and sea. As a result, you can find options like Brixham Hake with Somerset Chorizo, parsnip and wild garlic or sweet cured Herring with burnt apple and pickled cucumber on the lunch menu. Then for dinner, there’s a blind tasting menu that is available in four, 6 or 8 course options. Then for something a little sweeter, sample desserts include flavours of peanut, blackcurrant and espresso.
For those looking to pair the delicious food with some wine, there is also an option to do this with your tasting menu, otherwise there is an extensive list of wines available by the glass or bottle. Offering a variety from around the world, you can expect to see everything from an Italian Gavi to a German Reisling, and further afield like Australian Chardonnays. However if you like to keep your wine as local as your food, then check out the choice of English wines available. These have been sourced from Danebury Vineyards in Hampshire, and come as two different whites, perfect for pairing with fish.
