Genteel country house on the inside, continental café on the outside, Truckles is a far cry from the usual Davy’s look. Sit at rustic tables or lounge on cosy Chesterfields in the bar & order from a typical selection of trademark, old-school favourites: starters of chicken-liver pâté or potted crab with toast ahead of Cumberland sausages & mash or a plate of hand-carved Alderton ham with hot buttered potatoes & piccalilli – not forgetting treacle tart or a British cheeseboard to finish. The ample wine list – another Davy’s signature – has plenty by the glass, as well as a modest selection of ports, sherries & Madeira. Outside, the sheltered paved expanses of Pied Bull Yard are a genuine escape from the tourist clamour of the nearby British Museum.
