Ramen specialist Tonkotsu shows no signs of slowing down in its quest for world domination, adding yet another London site to its portfolio, this time in Walthamstow.
Found on Hoe Street, this branch of the popular ramen empire offers the same affordable and tasty fare that we have come to expect from the brand. The dining room follows the minimalist Japanese aesthetic, which translates as tiled flooring, lots of beech wood and exposed ceiling pipes. There is also a stand alone bar flanked by a few stools, where you can enjoy an authentic Japanese beer or a shot of sake.
Having opened its doors in the winter of 2020, and in the grip of Coronavirus restrictions, Tonkotsu Walthamstow places big emphasis on deliveries and collections, which is great if you are short on time or can’t be bothered to get changed out of your pyjamas (no judgement here). However, the restaurant does have some tables available for dining in.
On the menu, you will find Tonkotsu’s signature ramen dishes, including toppings of chilli chicken, the extra hot Geki Kara and even a vegetarian variety topped with Japanese miso mushrooms. You can also tailor your ramen to your own preferences, by topping it up with extra helpings of nori, bok choy or extra broth. Elsewhere on the menu, you can tuck into gyozas stuffed with either meat or vegetables, as well as trying out side dishes such as edamame beans sprinkled with sea salt, tenderstem broccoli or a helping of chicken karaage.
There are sweet treats to explore too, namely Tonkostu’s signature ice cream sandos - options include chocolate and miso salted caramel or a milk float variety that’s coated in colourful sugar sprinkles. Prefer liquid afters? Instead opt for the likes of a Shimoda Mikan Pale Ale or a glass of wine.
