“Beautiful surroundings, beautiful food, beautiful people”, drooled a fan of this personally run, boutique hotel on the North Norfolk coast. Wacky sculptures and a striking mix of classic and contemporary furnishings set the tone, while hungry visitors can choose the casual ‘eating rooms’ or the lushly appointed conservatory overlooking the walled garden. “Rising star” Eric Snaith saves most of ambitious and innovative culinary moves for a stunning eight-course ‘conversation menu’, which pairs fascinating wines with dishes ranging from pollack poached in dripping with elderflower, watercress and asparagus to Norfolk lamb with sweetbreads, lemon balm and courgettes. Desserts also have herbal undertones – think strawberries with camomile and buttermilk or blood orange sorbet and curd with mugwort cream. Meanwhile lunchtime sandwiches, seafood and Sunday roasts keep the passing trade happy. Enthusiastic staff are eager to please.
