In the basement of Red’s True Barbecue – the sole London link in a chain of southern US-style nosheries based in northern England – The Woods is a dark glowering booze bunker. It operates under a canopy of twisted twigs and branches, and features live music and DJs at weekends; expect anything from indie, dance and blues to ska. Beers from Brooklyn and Brewdog lubricate proceedings, as does the output of Leeds-based brewer Legitimate Industries (including Tax Evasion Pils, and Election Fraud IPA) – on draught and in growlers. Otherwise, you can sink boilermakers, boozy shakes (rum, malt, maple and banana), beery ice-cream floats (strong Russian stout with chocolate ripple, perhaps), and palatably priced plonk. Cocktails here are no rivals for the sophisticated concoctions found nearby at Scout or Lounge Bohemia, but bargain-basement hoochy iced teas and Sours aren’t short of takers. Order them with Deep South smokehouse chow from the kitchen upstairs.
