Touted as the only pub in the land with a county border running right through its bar, The White Post stands on the spot where Somerset meets Dorset. Set amid gorgeous countryside with lovely views from its garden (watch out for the chickens), it’s now home to chef Brett Sutton (ex-The Eastbury Hotel, Sherborne) and his family. Local and home-grown produce mean a lot here, and the food offers a mix of zesty modern ideas underpinned by sound pub classics: adventurous souls could go for sea bass ceviche with elderflower gel, apple, sea herbs and pickled radishes followed by ‘sugar pit’ pork belly with a Serrano ham and potato cake, carrots, peas and scrumpy cider, while traditionalists might prefer chicken and ham pie or sausages with caramelised onions and bubble ‘n’ squeak. A tasting menu adds to the pleasure, while drinkers have some good local ales and ciders, as well as a decent selection of wines.
