The White Lion is in Weston, a village just outside Crewe in Cheshire. Its buildings date back to 1652 (the bar and restaurant are named after this date) and it’s also a 17 room strong hotel. Prices for rooms range from £87.50 to £107.50. The decor elevates the traditional country pub, meaning stone floors are combined with modern dining furniture.
Food is served all day. Starters from the main menu include confit duck leg with Cumberland sauce, cauli cheese croquettes and spiced parsnip soup. Those looking to share can choose from a whole baked Camembert or a charcuterie that’s also available vegetarian.
Main course options include fish and chips, pie of the day and an 8oz gammon loin chop. Deviation from pub classics comes via the likes of miso braised flat mushrooms, teriyaki salmon and stuffed fillet of plaice. There’s also a range of burgers. Highlights here are a miso paneer burger and a steak burger with candied bacon.
On Sundays a roast is served. This is a set menu where two courses are £22.95 and three are £27.95. Meat options are gammon or beef and there’s a mixed nut and apricot roast for vegetarians. For an additional £5 per person you can upgrade to a roast platter, a selection of roast meats served with pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese.
The lunch menu is two courses for £13.95 or three for £16.95. It includes soup of the day to start, Thai red curry for main and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. The White Lion also has a sandwich menu. This features crayfish with a marie rose sauce and a chicken shawarma flatbread. Breakfast options range from a full English to a selection of cereals to smashed avocado on toast.
