SquareMeal Review of The Wheatsheaf - Borough

A Southwark fixture since 1772, this redoubtable tavern has been re-launched as a Young’s house, all spruced up and tricked out in nu-Victoriana. After a foodie foraging session on Borough Market, slake your thirst with draught ales from Meantime, Camden and Young’s, whose Stoney’s Gold and Double Chocolate Stout are rightly popular. To eat, order born-again pub snacks or head outside for a bigger roster of victuals served in retro enamel tins from a converted VW campervan parked on the pub’s heated terrace – think mac ‘n’ cheese, whiskey-coated sticky ribs, hay-cooked ham and spit-roast chicken marinated in cider with a side of spicy haricot beans. Food prices are pub average (mains from £10-20) and wines start at £17.45 a bottle. A board showing up-to-date information on departures from nearby London Bridge ensures you won’t miss your train home.
