Open between mid-March and mid-November, this timber-framed, slate-hung freehouse, with magnificent estuary views is situated in an area of outstanding beauty at the end of the historic Exeter Canal, which all means it’s well worth the walk, cycle or boat ride you have to make to get to it. Besides the setting there’s a convivial atmosphere, thanks to genial hosts, and the food isn’t bad either. Popular staples include a beef burger with pork sausage and bap, large prawns with mayo or a salmon fillet with lemon chive butter, new potatoes and asparagus salad.
Practical pine strip floors help create a breezy atmosphere indoors, but for most this is all about the large pub garden and the views. Worth noting is the large ‘cook your own’ BBQs area with its own deck and marquee available to hire.
