About

Situated just off Old Street roundabout, this charming old corner pub has been given new life as an airy all-day eatery. Its daily changing menu features dishes that draw on both classic British and European cuisine. Our starter of jellied pork terrine over-emphasised the jelly, while an earthy crab soup came with a rich rouille and crisp-thin croûtons, yet still missed the mark somewhat. We had more success with our mains: Middle White pork patties and borlotti beans arrived with an uplifting salsa verde that cut through the rich meat, and wood pigeon with radicchio was served just the right side of rare. Drinkers have plenty to applaud here, courtesy of a well-curated bar offering a good-sized wine list that spans the globe – including plenty of choice by the glass and carafe. The range of draught beers is also impressive, and there’s even a small list of classic cocktails.

Rudest manager I have ever met. Ruined the night for me.

We had booked two tables for a works do last night (Thu 9th Dec 2021). Our manager had initially put a tab of £300 behind the bar (tab 15). During the evening I went up to place my order of drinks and was told that we had gone past the tab and that I needed to pay - I was a bit surprised that the bar tab had run out. At the time I didnt know my manager had put £300 behind the bar and was told by this bartender that the tab was £200 and that we had gone past that and I therefore needed to pay. I didnt question this and then paid. Then about 15 mins later some colleagues of mine went to get drinks from the bar and came back and said that they didnt have to pay and that there was still about £50 left on the tab. So at this point we had actually spent about £250 out of the £300 tab.

At this point I decided to chat to the bartender that served me as I wanted him to see that he had made a mistake by charging me and for him to apologise and give me a refund. As soon as i started speaking to him about this subject his immediate words were in his strong Irish accent 'get out of my effing face!' - i was shocked by this and continued to explain that he had got things wrong and owed me money but then just said 'take it up with your effing friends', and waved his hand at me to dismiss me then disappeared off downstairs. I then turned round to another bartender and asked to speak to the manager. Imagine my dismay and shock when he told me that THAT IS OUR MANAGER!!! Jeez!

For the rest of the night I asked others to return to the bar for me as (a) didnt want another confrontation with this individual and (b) he would probably incorrectly charge me again. And whenever i did appear over he was just giving me evil looks and making me feel very uncomfortable.

Anyway about 30-45 mins later one of the other barmen come over to the table holding a card machine reader and says we will refund you. So it seems this rude idiot did realise that he had made a mistake. But was there an apology in person from him? No.

Tell me - is this the way to treat patrons of your establishment? In the end we upped the tab by another £80 - spending £380 at least there. Should you immediately start confronting your customers in an aggressive way swearing at them and telling them to eff off? Or should you listen to them and calmly chat to them and admit mistakes and apologise???

What a vile individual. To think this is the manager is beyond belief. I really hope his superiors read this review and do something about this man's appalling behaviour. I will not be returning there and intend to make sure everyone avoids it like the plague.

And to think this was our last team meal of the year with a couple of the team leaving the company too. What a sad ending.
