The Swan is a handsome, revamped coaching inn dating from the mid-18th century, with six outstanding bedrooms, informal, restaurant-style dining and an air of old-fashioned bonhomie. Regulars may sup locally brewed ales in the bar, but everyone else is here for the cracking seasonal food – a compendium of modern brasserie dishes and updated pub classics. Slices of homemade sausage roll or Cornish mackerel fillets with salsa verde on toast feature on the good-value lunch and all-day bar menu, while roast partridge with spinach, lentils and bread sauce or aged Chew Valley rib-eye with hand-cut chips and mushy peas fly the local flag on the evening carte, with damson bread-and-butter pud to finish. Overall, this a wonderful place to unwind, especially in fine weather when the terrace and garden are a major draw.
