Michelin-starred chef, Ryan Blackburn, further proves himself as Cumbria’s culinary king with the introduction of his most recent Lake District venture, The Schelly. Positioned directly next to his flagship, The Old Stamp House, The Schelly promises customers a more casual, relaxed iteration of Blackburn's menu.
Maintaining the chef's innovative approach to classic dishes, this venue offers a selection of small plates designed to be shared with friends and enjoyed alongside a glass of wine.
Named after a rare freshwater fish found exclusively around the Lake District, embracing local produce is a clear priority at The Schelly. This is reflected in many of the dishes offered, such as the Cartmel Valley Cumberland sausage and egg yolk sauce, or the Yew Tree Herdwick hogget shoulder with mint and anchovy salad, both made with meat sourced from Cumbrian farms.
The menu will change seasonally, ensuring that diners can enjoy the best produce on offer. Although the local landscape and produce is undoubtedly a major influence on Blackburn’s cooking, he has also incorporated dishes inspired by his travels and appreciation of different cultures.
The emphasis on sustainability follows through to the wine list, where Blackburn’s sommelier team have crafted a highly considered selection of wines from small-scale growers across Europe, available to be enjoyed by the glass or bottle.
While the restaurant is designed to operate on a first come first serve basis, with space for twenty-four walk-ins, for the best table in the house you will have to make a reservation in advance. The only bookable table in the restaurant, the 6-man table has a direct view into the kitchen, allowing you to observe Blackburn’s team in action as they prepare your meal.
