Compact and bright, The Rose Garden attracts West Didsbury locals with simple white furniture, a small outside seating area and a seasonal British menu of unpretentious yet inventive dishes. A starter of steak and radish showcased perfectly pink treacle-cured fillet, accompanied by peppery radish and watercress; broad beans and asparagus added a fresh taste of spring. Hay-baked pigeon breast and smoked potato purée with crunchy apple, celery, walnut and radicchio created a thoroughly modern Waldorf salad. A classic main course of succulent turbot, wild garlic and roast Jersey Royals was enlivened by an aromatic Noilly Prat sauce, while a celebration of lamb encompassed caper-crusted rack, crispy breast and intensely flavoured seared kidney. Dessert, an elegant rhubarb compilation, skilfully demonstrated the fruit three ways, alongside a pistachio mousse and lightly spiced ginger-nut purée. Good-value lunch and set evening menus plus a well-chosen wine list give extra polish to this little gem.
