Following a recent refurb, this gastropub has re-emerged with an extra helping of personality – check out the ‘suited pig in a rocking chair’ logo, the racy cowboy art in the ladies’ loo, and the matching cowgirls decorating the gents’ facilities. The kitchen deals in refined pub classics, ranging from Brixham mussels in cider or salmon and cod fishcakes with heritage tomato salad to shepherd’s pie or braised lamb breast with asparagus, confit potatoes and anchovies. Sunday lunch brings Torre Meadow roast beef with huge, crisp Yorkshire puddings, while delicately presented desserts might include banana split with salted caramel or refreshing lemon and sumac posset. With Hampshire-brewed Upham ales on draught, scenic Hampshire views all around and the prospect of uninterrupted walks all the way to Poole, there’s certainly much to cheer about at this slick operation.
