This gorgeous old wood-panelled boozer has seen plenty of Mayfair life over three centuries, including a spell under the ownership of Guy Richie, who drank here with his celeb chums. The former Mr Madonna sold up in 2013, but new owners have kept the real ales and essential pubbiness of the bar, and the pretty first-floor dining room retains its gold-painted ceiling and jovial yet more formal atmosphere. Smart staff move deftly between tables, distributing refined British gastro fare such as ale-battered catch of the day, minted peas and chunky hand cut chips. Main-course Norfolk chicken breast is pepped up with forest mushrooms, celeriac, roasted garlic and a truffled tarragon sauce, while generous portions of English ricotta and spinach ravioli receive a textural boost from courgette ribbons, lemon thyme and caper brown nut butter. Rolo chocolate and blood orange fondant with honeycomb ice cream and a handful of sugared almonds makes for a delightful ending, helped by a global wine list that is pitched at regular pub quaffers as well as local Mayfair millionaires.

We started with a drink at the bar; both drinks were supposed to be fizzy and both were flat - the soda water was barely sparkling, and the heineken was also rather flat.
We had dinner at the dining area in the back of the bar. The service was really not good. The waitress put our starters and our mains through the system at the same time, so they arrived at the same time. They also left off our side order. The result: luke warm/over cooked fish/soggy mains, delivered to us no more than 30 seconds after our starters were cleared away.
The food was okay; a bit odd (mushroom sauce with fish, and peas and sweetcorn wityh harissa and pesta and halloumi) and the service meant that it wasn't as the chef intended it - as it was sat for 15 minutes before we ate it! It's not badly priced, but the wine is heavily marked up - (as in all restaurants) however this was significantly more.
The waitress who messed up our food order wasn't the one who sorted our bill, and that lady also had a bad attitude. Make sure you ask to remove the service charge!!
The atmosphere is the only small saving grace, which is quite buzzy.
