This cheerfully updated member of the Geronimo Inns group is now prettily decked out with bright orange wallpaper and some splashes of blue and red paint, although that doesn’t bother the throngs who drop by to quaff pints of Adnams and bottles of Côtes du Rhône at the boisterous bar. Those seeking solid sustenance head to the colourful dining room, which serves a populist menu of pies, rib-eye steaks and dishes such as crispy bacon and duck salad with a poached egg, Irish stew or baked salmon fillet with new potatoes and béarnaise sauce, while signature ‘family favourites’ are denoted by a ‘porker’ logo. The Phoenix is also home to Geronimo’s chef-training kitchen, and offers midweek ‘guinea pig’ lunches for those who fancy trying out new dishes; also note Monday night’s steak club.
