The Orangery at The Fan Museum

SquareMeal Review of The Orangery at The Fan Museum

If you fancy a breather from the thousands of whimsical conceits and delicate artistic creations on display at Greenwich’s Fan Museum, treat yourself to afternoon tea in the adjoining Orangery – an airy, classical room with high-ceilings, pastel shades, a flowery trompe l’oeil mural and tall arched windows. For a modest outlay of £6, callers receive a traditional spread consisting of scones with cream and jam, plus home-baked cakes and tea or coffee. Booking is strongly advised for the two sittings, and it’s worth noting that visitors wishing to take tea are required to pay the museum’s nominal admission charge. Lunch can also be provided for groups and large parties. The lovely room overlooks an oasis of tranquillity in the form of a secret Japanese garden, complete with a fan-shaped parterre, pond, stream and oriental architectural features.
