SquareMeal Review of The Old Fountain

Silver Award

A poster of a 1950s singing cowboy announces a forthcoming ‘Hot Rockin’ Western Bop’ at this slightly dishevelled backstreet boozer off City Road. We’re sold – but what attracts the Fountain’s numerous fans is its fine range of daily changing cask and craft ales. Siren’s Liquid Mistress (a red ale), Oakham’s Shot in the Dark (porter) and an eight-strong Viking invasion from Gothenburg craft brewery, Beerbliotek, are among the star turns when we visit. Prices are fair and a bargain lunch deal from Monday to Wednesday sees a pint of cask ale (or glass of wine) thrown in free with any £10 main. Tasty pub food might include chicken supreme with a white bean stew, or fried halloumi with ratatouille. A different tap beer is suggested to accompany each dish: Tiny Rebel’s The Full Nelson turns out to be a smart choice with lamb shoulder pie and mash with sautéd greens.
