No self-respecting walker or mountaineer can come to the Lakes without taking a pint in the Hiker’s Bar of the ODG. It’s almost defiantly rough & ready, with stalls from the old cowshed still
in place, but it’s also become a place of pilgrimage. Situated at the head of the Great Langdale valley & its legendary Pikes, the ODG has played host to some of Britain’s greatest climbers:
Sir John Hunt, Chris Bonington & others have all dropped by to practice, give lectures or attend celebratory dinners. Immortalised in Bill Birkett’s black & white photos, they look down as
you spread out your OS map & plan your own route among the Lake District’s most stunning scenery. Besides atmosphere, the ODG offers beer, whisky, no-nonsense bar grub & simple home-cooked
dinners in the hotel dining room next door.
