“Makes a trip to the coast more than special”, notes a fan of Kevin and Jacki Mangeolles’ “fabulous” restaurant-with-rooms in touristy north Norfolk. Their sympathetically refurbished 18th-century coaching inn has splashes of New England breeziness, while muted colours and evening candles adding a romantic feel to the elegant dining room. As befits its Michelin-starred-status, the food here is overtly ambitious and Kevin’s cooking “always impresses” with its inventive use of top-notch local ingredients: Brancaster lobster is given the ceviche treatment with passion fruit; Norfolk quail comes with morteau sausage, beetroot and cherry vinegar; dry-aged loin of lamb is accompanied by oyster mayonnaise and samphire. For dessert, perhaps try Norfolk blueberry crème caramel with hazelnut praline and mint ice cream or apricot parfait with meringue, raspberry ice cream and yoghurt honey sauce. Jacki Mangeolles oversees the well-curated wine list, service is “really friendly” and there’s also a laid-back bar for drinks. The six bedrooms are lovely too. Note: lunch by prior arrangement Wed-Fri.
