Andy Mil, from the hit West Soho cellar, Cocktail Trading Company, created the list for this new first-floor bar at what was previously the Champagne Lounge at Ku (the popular gay venue that still trades downstairs). The drinks here are deftly executed, with typical calls including Pineapple Almond (rum) Martini, a Tequila Coconut and Caraway Sour, and Highlander (where cherry liqueur is added to the modern classic Manhattan recipe – though perhaps a more sophisticated whisky base than Haig Club is needed). Violets are Blue (a twisted Aviation) costs £11.50, which seems ambitious. We’re not too impressed with the look here, either. Tiffany-blue high stools against a jet bar are a classic art deco-inspired option, but other elements (crystal-beaded curtain chandeliers, silver portraits of Bowie and Dietrich, and one particularly lurid abstract wall-hanging) feel provincial and passé – especially given the disco soundtrack. Nevertheless, the drinks are mostly on the (London) money.
