Rescued from pub chain hell by its music-manager landlord, the Jericho Tavern has gone back to its roots as a venue showcasing up-and-coming bands. Radiohead and John Peel may look down from the walls, but the new look is definitely not ‘shabby muso dive’ – thanks to stripped floors, exposed brickwork, black surfaces and monochrome pop art. It’s a wholly convincing take on a smart local hostelry, with 20 beers on tap, English potato vodka behind the bar, quiz nights and book-swap events, plus a menu touting the likes of lamb shank shepherd’s pie or salmon and Devon crab fishcakes. The covered garden out back is an open secret, and even contains a banana tree.
