Nestled in a fold of the stunning Winster Valley, just a couple of miles from Windermere, this handsome, whitewashed coaching inn has received a considerable facelift, inside and out. A lovely garden offers the prospect of alfresco dining with views over the fells on good days; otherwise escape the routine Cumbrian weather in the cosy, slate-floored bar. A couple of crackling fires ramp up the warmth, and the good-looking menu is worth taking your time over. Starters might include a terrine of local pork, sweet chilli and black pudding accompanied by rustic bread, with mains featuring yet more North Country produce: try Winster Valley pheasant breast served on a parsnip rösti with red wine and cranberry gravy. To drink, order a pint of Hare of the Dog, the pub’s signature ale brewed by the Tirril Brewery just up the road.
