SquareMeal Review of The Grove Bar & Restaurant

Imagine a boozer in which plants have been allowed to run amok, & the interior has been kitted out following an ‘everything must go’ sale at a local antique market, & you can understand some of The Grove's chaotic charm. This is a spacious, occasionally rowdy & decidedly family-friendly place where the menu gallops round the Mediterranean looking for influences: starters might include lamb kofta kebabs with couscous or an insalata caprese of tomato, mozzarella & basil, while main courses find penne with red peppers, roasted vegetables & feta rubbing shoulders with crispy-fried grey mullet with polenta cake, grilled asparagus, vine tomatoes & a gremolata-like garlic & parsley dressing. Weekend brunches are popular with the young local crowd; cocktails & an inexpensive drinks list keep the party going well into the night.

Disappointed

We had been looking forward to going here as we live nearby, so we booked a table for the first Euros game. Once we were seated we were completely ignored by the waiter, who was quite young and seemed new, and had to ask for everything - including cutlery which we had to ask for twice while our food was sitting cold. When we asked to see the dessert menu (because they didn't offer) he said "well it's the same menu so do you want to see that"... Yes obviously. The calamari was cold in the middle and the sangria was very weak and cloudy, not like sangria at all. Despite the pub advertising that it was playing the Euros, we had to ask several times for them to put it on the TV, by which time we had missed the first 20 mins. At the end of the meal we decided to request to remove the service charge as we didn't feel like it was deserved and were disappointed with the service. However the waiter, a different one this time, an American, said "well you can remove it but like everyone pays it" and said that a lot of work goes into it all and that if we had it removed the manager would be involved and it would reflect badly on them. He obviously wasn't the same waiter as before so perhaps he would have been better, but he was quite forceful that we pay the bill - even when we asked repeatedly not to. Overall a very disappointing experience and will not be recommending or returning.

Awful Sunday Roast

Potatoes were undercooked and not crispy at all. Pork crackling was so hard I couldn’t cut it with a knife. Missing Yorkshire pudding despite being on the menu. Gravy was thin and watery.

Waste of £15.

Lovely and welcoming place. Simple and unpretentious, Yet their food is delicious and cooked to perfection. Always something new on the menu. I love their Suffolk Ale and Marinated Seafood Salad with Garlic & Parsley Dressing. Yummy

This is a lovely place. It's unlike British pub; it isn't painted in black and dark brown, has no peanuts hanging next to the counter and has no carpet at all. It's rather holiday like place decorated in almost pastel combination of green and yellow colours. But the best feature of the Grove is its delicious food. Last time six of us went for a drink but ended up having full dinner. And who wouldn't after seeing their appetizing hand written menu changed twice daily. We were delighted both with the food and the service. The food looked fresh and was very succulent. Waitresses are like ballerinas there. They are ever so attentive but never bother you and are always present when you need them. My colleagues were most impressed with the food though. It was very tasty and dishes were copious. We didn't need to buy side dishes as everything we needed was already on our plates. Dishes are more expensive than say in Whetherspoon but the quality is incomparable. Pitcher is £10.95 which is not expensive at all for Hammersmith. We are definitely coming back next week for and early diner and to watch Champions league in their function room. Delighted with the discovery. Everything I want from a pub is one place. Highly recommended.
