Young licensees Catherine and Leigh Spooner have filled this handsome Georgian village inn with lovely old furniture, vintage ‘finds’ (Leigh has a bit of a Guinness memorabilia habit), antique
over-mantle mirrors and a fair amount of kitsch – look around and you’ll find fish in glass cases and a stuffed boar’s head on one wall. With jugs of flowers, newspapers to read and roaring fires,
this is a boozer you’ll want to spend serious time in. The short, simple menu features the likes of steak pie with a herby suet crust, poached smoked haddock on spinach or gammon and eggs – all
produced in a tiny kitchen at the back by a local ‘home-cook’, Claire Hudson. Sunday lunch is epic, and Claire’s chocolate and almond torte is worth the journey alone. The final flourish? Vintage
