About

The upstairs room at popular post-work boozer The George is now home to a smart restaurant serving up a selection of Brit-themed favourites. Dark wood, soft grey banquettes, vintage illustrations and friendly service create a welcoming space away from the bustle of the bar below, while the private Horace Walpole dining room has the added appeal of views over the Royal Courts of Justice. A French-leaning wine list and British craft brews lend support to the one-page menu, though inconsistent cooking sometimes lets the side down. A warmly spiced starter of razor clams with chorizo, broad beans and sherry won full marks, but watery shepherd’s pie made a sad foil to the rich and softly braised neck of lamb it was served alongside. To finish, we wish we’d avoided the dry and lukewarm spotted dick in favour of cheeses and digestifs wheeled in on the trolley.

Disaster averted
The danger with online menus is that despite your best intentions and the restaurant warning that they are only "sample" menus, sometimes you cannot help but mentally decide what to order in advance thus cranking up the anticipation level. When you then arrive and discover (a) said dish is not on the menu, (b) it's closest match is no longer available, (c) what has now become your hurried third choice is also not available exactly as described and (d) all four of your dining party are in the same boat, it doesn't exactly bode well for an enjoyable meal. Fortunately our initial fears were quickly dissolved as it soon became apparent that whatever the kitchen does at P&G, it does very well. Our table's main course of haddock in a mushroom and cream sauce was absolutely on the money; fish cooked perfectly and the sauce velvety with the hint of all kinds of wonderful funghi clamouring for attention in the background. Unfortunately we had tickets to an event in Middle Temple Hall so the meal was a tad rushed (kitchen does not open until 6pm) and having passed by this venue countless times, I am now very glad that we took the decision to give it a go. The pub on the ground floor is a lively, old fashioned proper pub and a great place for pre- and/or post-prandials. The upstairs restaurant is all together a much more subdued area but very welcoming and if the food continues in the vein we experienced, it won't be long before we return on an occasion when we can truly savour the food and the atmosphere.
