From the name, you might think this particular George was an entrenched English alehouse – in fact, it lies somewhere between a traditional pub & a modern-day style bar. To confuse matters
further, it feels as if it belongs in a rather anonymous continental town square rather than the heart of historic Holborn – although it’s a pleasant spot for a lunchtime burger & a beer
(Corona & Amstel shows where the bar’s loyalties lie). With its dark, streamlined interior & approachable staff, The George is also comfy enough for a post-work wind-down over a reasonably
priced bottle of Chardonnay or a jug of summer Pimm’s – especially if you park up on the wide pavement terrace out front, shaded by chic parasols (heaters kick in on chillier days). In all, The
George is ‘nice’ rather than memorable.
